This is the Way

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. - John 17:17

Every year I read through the Book of Psalms in my personal study time. Year after year, the Lord provides conviction and clarity through this beautiful book of poetry. Nothing sustains my wandering soul like the word of God. This refreshing and refining by the scriptures is essential in the life of a follower of Christ. During my study of Psalm chapter one, I was reminded of this truth once again. The Psalmist writes:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” -Psalms 1:1-3

This truth is beautiful! In this Psalm we are given two examples of the ways of righteousness; overcoming and fruitfulness. Recognizing and overcoming the culture around us is imperative in our walk as a Christian. We are surrounded daily with a wayward culture that distracts us and infiltrates our minds with deception and idolatry. The only way to overcome this brokenness is with truth. With the truth of the Word of God we are able to identify and overcome the deception and temptation of our culture. The Holy Spirit uses the truth of the Word to guide us as His righteousness.

The second example of the ways of righteousness centers on our fruitfulness. As believers, we are called to put on display the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). These fruits (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) are grown in our faith and matured in our sanctification. The writer proclaims that our fruit yielding is dependent on our delight and meditation on the law of the Lord. Simply put, in order to love like Jesus loved, we must know Jesus…and keep knowing him more and more. This is only achievable if we are delighting and meditating on His Word.

This path of righteousness is a worthy journey. It will require the Lord’s providential hand to go before us and guide us on the path, but, it also requires our discipline and delight in the Word of God. The Word of God is the foundational source in which we learn to walk, live, and love as Jesus. It is how we know our Lord. It is how we recognize the attacks from the enemy. It is the way we yield fruit. It is the truth in which we are sanctified. Delight in it!

I Love you and consider it an honor to serve as your pastor.
